The TwinsStifani conquer Amazon

“We tell the story of racing driver Alonso”

Search for TwinsStifani and you will find the twins from Salento who, through study and determination, have earned their place in the international audiovisual industry.

The names of Gabriele and Luca Stifani, the 40-year-olds born and raised in Neviano, appear on one of the latest series produced for Amazon Prime Video: “Fernando”, available online since 25 September. Across five episodes, it follows the everyday life of Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso, between his private life and public successes, including two consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018 and 2019. Together, under director Enric Folch, they brought to life everything seen and heard on screen: Gabriele as director of photography and Luca as sound engineer.

Folch and the Stifani twins had already earned recognition on the same streaming platform, including a Sports Emmy Awards nomination, for “All Or Nothing: Manchester City”, the first European documentary series in Prime Video’s sports franchise.

“It was an extremely important affirmation that brought us a great deal of creative responsibility,” the two filmmakers say. “We had important leading roles in building trust with the subject — in this case Fernando Alonso. We followed him for a long time: in these situations, it is important to keep an eye on him constantly while trying to remain as invisible as possible.”

Did the speed create complications? “The world of documentaries moves fast. You have to be careful never to miss the chance to capture the ‘moment’. In this particular case, filming cars travelling at 340 kilometres per hour, keeping them in focus and trying to record their sound, was a completely new adventure,” says Luca Stifani.

They now live in London, having returned in recent days after a family holiday in Salento, where they come back every year. “It has been a long journey of study and training, with many stops and fresh starts, serious financial difficulties and personal challenges,” says Gabriele, “but the dream of working in cinema has been our guiding star.”

Their ultimate dream is Hollywood. “And winning an Oscar for best film and directing,” they add together, smiling. Meanwhile, since 2013, they have been working on “The Devils on Wheels”, a documentary about “Duel”, the first major film by the then-unknown Steven Spielberg, released in 1971. “Its 50th anniversary is coming this year, and we are trying to finalise the last agreements so we can complete it in time.”

Among the projects they are working on or developing are a photography project about the pandemic, a biographical short film about Easter spent with a family of butchers, a documentary for the Olympics and two films: one about the legendary character Tiger Mask, and another to be shot entirely in their hometown of Neviano.

There is also a dream connected to Lecce football club for the TwinsStifani, who as boys briefly played with its youth team under Corvino’s watch. “We dream of ‘All or nothing: Lecce’. It would offer a strong contrast with prestigious clubs such as Manchester or Juventus,” they say, “telling another side of football: the sacrifices of those who keep a club going without the financial strength of many other teams, yet still make people dream. Great stories are always found in hidden places.”

A series with roots in Salento about Alonso

English translation of the 2020 Italian print article.

Two names from Salento feature on a series dedicated to the great Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso. It is a new adventure for the “Twin Stifani”: twin brothers Gabriele and Luca Stifani, filmmakers from Neviano in Salento, respectively director of photography and sound engineer on Amazon’s documentary series “Fernando”. Its five episodes have been available on Prime Video since 25 September, with the racing champion at their centre.

The Stifani brothers have always been passionate about travelling the world in search of stories to tell. “This is certainly our most important project since we began our film careers,” the brothers explain, “and we are very proud of the roles and responsibilities we took on.”

They add: “Last year was also an important one. We were guests at the Sports Emmy Awards gala in New York with another series we filmed for Amazon, ‘All or Nothing: Manchester City’.

“We owe these two great adventures to the documentary ‘Duel. Il diavolo su ruote’, dedicated to Spielberg’s first film, which we are still working on and trying to release for its 50th anniversary in 2021. With Fernando,” they continue, “we are on our second collaboration with the streaming giant. We reached this milestone through our determination, but everything began with our collaboration with Enric Folch, the Spanish director who has been our friend for many years.”
