Do you remember the twins from Neviano, Luca and Gabriele Stifani, who helped capture Manchester City on and off the pitch during the 2017–18 football season? One worked as a sound recordist, the other filmed, and both edited sequences, contributing to the documentary series All or Nothing about Pep Guardiola’s team, subsequently distributed by Amazon Prime Video. Its images told the story of the Sky Blues’ Premier League and English cup victories.

All or Nothing: Manchester City received a Sports Emmy Awards nomination, one of the prestigious honours for excellence in American sports television presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. At the fortieth awards ceremony, held on the evening of 20 May at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, however, the winner announced was Tom vs Time, produced by Facebook Watch. “When we heard about the nomination,” Luca recalls, “we were about to return to Europe from the Middle East, where we had been working. We were exhausted; I think it was six in the evening. The news immediately restored our energy. We had not expected it, especially since almost a year had passed since our Premier League work.”

Gabriele is still visibly moved as he recalls: “As soon as our colleagues’ message arrived telling us about the nomination, we got goosebumps. We were with Enric Folch, one of the directors of All or Nothing. We hugged and raised a toast.” Luca continues their shared account: “A week and a half later the invitation arrived. We found ourselves alongside executives from Mediapro, Amazon and NFL, the American football channel.” Gabriele remembers the excitement: “We were astonished. The Jazz building at Lincoln Center was fantastic, with views across New York. As children we dreamed of waiting for the Oscars to be announced, and the Emmys are considered television’s Oscars. A dream almost achieved.” Luca describes the attention they received: “It was slightly surreal. We were sitting in the middle of the room with leading figures in American television. Fox and ESPN mentioned us in their official magazine, congratulating us on our series. We waited for our nomination to come up so we could see a fragment of our work on the big screen in the room.”

Then came the anticipation of winning. “Our documentary,” Gabriele explains, “was nominated for Outstanding Serialized Sports Documentary, competing against All or Nothing: A Season with the Dallas Cowboys, another Amazon series, this time about American football; HBO’s Being Serena, about tennis player Williams; ESPN’s Quest for the Stanley Cup; and Tom vs Time, about New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. When the fifteen seconds of our documentary were shown, there was an unexpected shower of applause. We thought we might win.” There was satisfaction nonetheless, and Gabriele offers a message: “We spoke a little in dialect to each other, making the situation even more surreal, reminding ourselves that we came from a small town in southern Italy and suddenly found ourselves among the stars. I hope this experience can inspire young people from small communities: you must always follow your dreams.”
