The Stifani twins: success and a first feature film
English translation of Silvia Resta’s original 2015 Italian article.
NEVIANO. They left Salento at just nineteen and moved to northern England to study film directing. Today, after many sacrifices, Luca and Gabriele Stifani (from left in the photograph), twins from Neviano, are ready to make their feature-film debut on the big screen. Born on 13 September 1980 into a family of five children, they became passionate about cinema at an early age and grew up determined to fulfil that dream, always supported by their father Totò and mother Agatuccia, who own a butcher’s shop in the village. In 1999 they moved to Newcastle for a ten-month course at International House. They later won a European Community scholarship to the prestigious Northumbria University, where they graduated with top marks in directing and film production in 2006.
Now thirty-five and living in London, they have produced numerous short films, documentaries and theatre works that have won awards around the world. Their current feature-length project is a documentary about Duel, American director Steven Spielberg’s first film, entitled The Devil on Wheels, which they hope to present in Salento. “We had to leave Italy,” they admit, “because unfortunately our country does not make room for young people. But we hope one day to return to our homeland, involve it in our projects and enrich it with our experience.”
