01 · The call

An opportunity to follow City

A phone call that can change your life. That is what Gabriele and Luca Stifani thought — though you can call them Twins Stifani or Stifani Bros — Italians abroad, travelling literally around the world in search of stories to tell through their filmmakers’ eyes. Good things “happen by chance”, they happily tell Hot Corn, recalling when on-set director Enric Folch called with an impossible-to-refuse project: follow Manchester City for an entire football season, capturing its moments in the first European documentary series in the All or Nothing saga, All or Nothing: Manchester City, produced by Mediapro for none other than Amazon Prime Video.

02 · The project

A season inside Manchester City

After covering the Michigan Wolverines, Dallas Cowboys, L.A. Rams, Arizona Cardinals and All Blacks, the American giant was entering the world of soccer to illuminate the behind-the-scenes life — and the heart of the matches — of one of the world’s top clubs. “You don’t always get the chance to work on a project like this. So many factors make it unique, above all the opportunity to create a European production unlike anything made before,” the Stifani Bros explain enthusiastically. They know something about impossible challenges: alongside other projects, they have the idea of making The Devils on Wheels, a documentary about Steve Spielberg’s Duel, also directed by the Catalan Folch.

03 · Camera and sound

Following Pep, every minute

But that, for now, is another story. A little under a year ago, the Stifanis’ journey took them to the Premier League through All or Nothing, directed by Manuel Huerga, following training, matches, away trips and the dressing room’s sacred dynamics step by step. “What was it like? Astonishing — spending a year with a team coached by modern football’s greatest manager, Pep Guardiola.” Their task was a delicate one: during matches, Gabriele had to keep his camera on Pep at all times, filming expressions, instructions and celebrations, while his brother Luca handled sound, in constant coordination, never giving an inch.

04 · Behind the scenes

Present without being seen

“Any anecdotes?” they reflect. “So many: going to Gündoğan’s home, for example — a great player and a great man. The others too. City are a very close-knit group: Stones, a lovely guy, as are De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Kompany. Not to mention Sterling, as funny as he is talented. A top club in every respect, never losing focus even when things were going well. In fact, the crew had to be careful not to create too many distractions.

We had to be there without being there. Our boundary was the touchline: we couldn’t go beyond it.”

05 · Guardiola

Tactics, respect and concentration

Ben Kingsley narrates the eight episodes (available in their original language on Amazon Prime, with Italian subtitles coming on 14 September) covering the record-breaking season in which Pep’s City triumphed with 100 points. Alongside him are the two Italian brothers from Puglia, Londoners by adoption, on an epic adventure they will never forget. Above all, there was that conversation with Pep at the end of the season, about “our Lecce and Italian football. Guardiola ultimately inspired a new idea of football in us: tactics and respect. He instils extraordinary concentration in the team without ever getting angry. Even after defeats — like the bitter FA Cup loss to Wigan — the club and Guardiola never gave up, making the players feel like a strong group. Pep watches matches in his head, as though he were playing.”

06 · The journey

Living the dream

Up and down England, around Europe hearing the Champions League anthem — including a ‘home’ away trip to Naples — in the most thrilling stadiums: “Anfield? A red inferno. Wembley? Magical.” Two brothers with the great dream of winning the most ambitious and beautiful professional challenges, as though playing fiery derbies and perhaps scoring an unforgettable goal in stoppage time. Their celebrations come from the heart. Their wish? “To become directors, but working in film and television is not easy. Faith, persistence and optimism brought us on this great journey. As they say in English: Living the Dream, always!”
