01 · The journey

From Guardiola to Alonso

ROME — Here they are again. We left them dreaming of retracing, through a documentary, the tracks of the Peterbilt 281 that starred in Duel. A couple of years ago we found them alongside Pep Guardiola, thanks to Prime Video’s documentary series All or Nothing: Manchester City. Now we meet them again as their latest extraordinary adventure is about to arrive: Fernando, another five-part Amazon documentary series, this time following motor-racing champion Fernando Alonso. They are the now-established filmmakers Gabriele and Luca Stifani, also known as Twins Stifani or Stifani Bros (Instagram: @twinsstifani), Italians working abroad and travelling the world in search of stories to tell.

02 · A small crew

Following the Triple Crown

“The project followed on from All or Nothing,” the delighted Stifani Bros tell us by phone. “MediaPro contacted us for a small crew. We were with director Enric Folch, and from April to June 2019 we travelled with Fernando Alonso.” It was an incredible journey, described with enthusiasm and pride by these young men from Puglia, who grew up dreaming of cinema and directing. On this mobile set, with its very small team, Luca was the sound engineer and Gabriele the director of photography. “Before returning with Renault, Fernando had retired from Formula One, but with the mindset of a champion he wanted to win the Triple Crown: the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That is the journey we followed,” the Stifanis continue.

03 · Across continents

A world beyond Formula One

Where Manchester City took them around England and Europe, Fernando literally carried them from one continent to another. “We had important roles in the All or Nothing crew, but here we really were on the front line. We went to Bahrain for the night-time F1 race, then to Paul Ricard near Marseille; we ended up in Fort Worth, Texas, for NASCAR, then Indianapolis, Toyota Gazoo in Cologne, and the Fernando Alonso circuit in Oviedo, Alonso’s home city, where there is also a museum dedicated to him. His childhood friends work there…”

04 · Indianapolis

The sound of a total spectacle

We have to ask about the best moment of this remarkable tour. “Indianapolis was the most exciting moment,” they reply proudly. “To think we had never followed motor racing, despite that circuit’s prestige. It is a different kind of race, with a special atmosphere, as though it were an event in itself. It was crucial for Alonso, and we fitted in well with the staff, building relationships with the McLaren team, who helped us film certain situations. Behind a driver is an endless team of people. We managed to film every aspect of the race. The atmosphere was wonderful: your ticket buys a complete spectacle.” A unique setting for a substantial technical challenge. “I was unprepared for certain kinds of noise,” Luca tells us. “Through the headphones you could hear everything: engines roaring, braking, the din. And they are constantly talking over the radio. The series shows what you do not see on television.”

05 · The person

A friendship beyond the camera

“Fernando? He is fantastic. It was easy to build a relationship. He was relaxed and very funny too. He gave us tips about what he should do; he is really approachable. He even brought a drone and started filming for us. When he is not working, he is at home, cycling, playing tennis or organising football matches. We went to his house to play FIFA!” the Stifanis continue. “And despite everything, his house is beautiful and well designed, but absolutely modest compared with what he could have. He is a very human person. We follow each other on Instagram, keep in touch occasionally, and he likes our photos. A lovely professional friendship has developed.” After a journey like this, a thought about the future: “We have things in development, including a series about football in Asia. But our dream is to take a film of our own to the Venice Film Festival.” We will see you on the Lido, then.
