An Italian obsession
English translation of Damiano Panattoni’s July 2015 Italian article.
Forty-four years after Duel, two young Italian filmmakers, brothers Luca and Gabriele Stifani, now want to restart the Peterbilt 281’s engine to produce an ambitious documentary about the film, explaining the importance of such a revolutionary work to new generations. Their project, entitled DOW – The Devil on Wheels, backed by Universal and directed by Enric Folch, has attracted many enthusiasts: its Kickstarter fundraising campaign in April raised more than £20,000 against the £60,000 needed to reach its goal.
“Our obsession with Duel,” they tell Ciak, “is linked to meeting Catalan director Enric Folch, who passed his obsession on to us. To us, Duel belongs to those films that, seen when you are young, remain indelibly etched in your mind. Unforgettable images: the iconic Peterbilt tanker against the red Plymouth.
The project? We have been in touch by email with Amblin and DreamWorks to approach Spielberg, but we haven’t spoken to him. Amblin, DreamWorks and Universal are aware of Devil On Wheels, however, and we hope to interview Spielberg.
So far, our journey into Duel has been rewarding; we have approached the project seriously and professionally. Viewers of the documentary will discover the birth of one of cinema’s great masterpieces through a journey full of discoveries. And if they haven’t seen Duel, after our DOW they will be dying to watch it.”
Following that experiment, fundraising has now moved to the website (thedevilonwheelsmovie.com, where you can also watch the project’s trailer), on which the two have opened a PayPal donation account. There is more: the Stifanis have received advice from the TriBeCa Film Institute and have been invited to Montréal’s Fantasia Film Festival from 23 to 26 July. In the autumn, with producer Roger Allen and the crew, they would like to begin filming on the highway in Los Angeles, retracing the tracks of Spielberg’s Peterbilt. Will they make it?
